China announced this week a comprehensive plan to phase out single use plastics.

The plan will start with banning all non-degradable bags in major cities by the end of this year and in the rest of the country by 2022.

Other items such as plastic utensils, food packaging, straws, bottles, and more will also be phased out.

China has long struggled with handling the waste of it’s 1.3 billion and counting population. The country’s largest dump, about the size of 100 football fields, is already full, 25 years ahead of schedule.

This move represents a major win for the environment as China produces over 20% of the world’s plastic waste.
