These burgers are made from pea protein, sunflower oil, beets and spices. Because oil is the second ingredient, there’s going to be a generous (and consequently, unhealthy) amount of oil in these burgers.
However, if you’re in the mood for a (plant-based) American classic (with a Mexican twist), then this is the recipe for you.
All of the ingredients are plant-based and can be picked up at your local Trader Joe’s.
Start by searing the burgers on a non-stick pan with a sprinkle of salt, pepper and garlic seasoning.
Because of the high oil content already in the burger, I did not add any oil into the pan. If you don’t have a non stick pan, then use oil. The grill would actually be your healthiest option.
Toast a pita pocket and then stuff it with your toppings.
The order in which the ingredients are spread out on the burger is important. We don’t want the sauces to rip through the pita bread. And it needs to look good.
Here’s how I built it from the bottom to the top.
- Layer lettuce on the bottom of the pita
- Pickles
- Mustard
- Refried Beans
- Burger Patty
- Queso Cheese
- Guacamole
- Tomatoes
Reminder: all of these ingredients are plant based and can be picked up at Trader Joes.
This burger will light up your taste buds. Enjoy!
