Between blasting rockets into space, designing supercars, and attempting to solve humanity’s most complex problems, Elon Musk is a pretty busy guy.
His day-to-day workflow is probably a bit…different from most people’s. But, he recently spoke out about his productivity secrets and it turns out his tips can apply to just about all of us.
Here are a few highlights.
Define and conquer. When you start work for the day, define your most important task (MIT) and crush that first. This should be the one thing that creates the most impact on your work; whether that’s responding to critical emails, writing 1000 words, or meticulously organizing your day.
Master the Art of Communication. One of Elon’s greatest assets is he is extremely clear, concise, and direct in his communication. No acronyms, no jargon, no beating around the bush. “People work better when they know what the goal is and why. It is important that people look forward to coming to work in the morning and enjoy working.” If you need some tips on upping your email communication game, check here.
Got goals? Stretch em. Musk has been known to set unreasonably ambitious deadlines for projects. This is a tactic. By stretching goals, he changes people’s perceptions of what is actually achievable. Although this sometimes leads to missed deadlines and re-evaluation of timelines, Elon has been said to get “twice as much as anyone else out of people.” This is why. Stretching personal goals can have the same effect and make you rethink your own capabilities.
