Today’s challenge is called Notice-Shift-Savor and it is designed to flip the switch on our natural habit of negative thinking.

It’s based on the science of neuroplasticity and creates a tangible shift in our mindset. The exercise is broken down into three steps.

Step 1 –  Notice your negativity bias.

Notice when your mind starts to spin out worst-case scenarios, self-doubt, anxiety, and fear.

This means it’s time to begin the exercise.

Step 2 – Shift to a state of gratitude

Once you notice your negativity bias kick in, it’s time to shift to a state of gratitude.

Focus in on one thing you are grateful for and why. You can say it out loud, in your head, or write it down on a piece of paper. It could be your home, your pets, your bed, your family; anything you are thankful for in your life and why you are thankful for it.

Step 3 – Savor

Now, this is where we carve out new neural pathways in the brain.

Once you have shifted to a state of gratitude, savor this feeling as deeply as you can for 15 seconds.

You can try closing your eyes and bringing your full awareness to how being grateful makes you feel. If that doesn’t work for you, you can try repeating what you are grateful for over a few times either with words or writing.

The important part is staying with and savoring the feeling of gratitude for at least 15 seconds.

This is where we transform our habit of overlooking positivity.

Share the notice-shift-savor exercise someone to help them shift out of their own negativity bias!
